Customs Broker/ Declarant

Key Responsibilities

• Compliance & Expertise: Serve as the primary expert on local customs regulations, tariffs, import/export restrictions, and free trade agreements.

• Declaration Management: Personally handle and oversee the accurate and timely preparation and submission of customs declarations for air, ocean, and road freight shipments (both import and export).

• License Holder: Act as the company's qualified and licensed customs broker, ensuring all activities are performed under your valid license and in full compliance with local law.

• Client Advisory: Provide expert advice to clients and the internal team on customs classification, valuation, duty optimization, and documentary requirements.

• Agency Liaison: Act as the main point of contact for customs authorities and other government agencies, managing audits, queries, and resolutions effectively.

• Process Setup: Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the customs brokerage process within the new country entity.

• Team Building: As the business grows, be prepared to recruit, train, and manage a team of customs declaration specialists.

Mandatory:

• A valid, local Customs Brokerage License for the respective country.

• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in preparing and managing customs declarations for air, ocean, and road freight shipments.

• Proven experience in a customs brokerage role within a freight forwarding or logistics company.

• Experience in a start-up or new business environment is a significant advantage.

Skills and Competencies

Languages:

• Fluency in both English and the local language is essential. Chinese (Mandarin) is a strong plus.

In-depth Regulatory Knowledge:

• Expert understanding of local customs laws, HS code classification, duty and tax structures, and preferential origin rules.

Tech-Savvy:

• High proficiency in Windows OS, MS Office, and local customs declaration software/systems.

Personal Qualities:

• Trustworthy and impeccable integrity in handling compliance matters.

• Hands-on and detail-oriented, with a commitment to accuracy.

• Proactive in staying updated on regulatory changes and implementing them.

• Positive and a collaborative team player, even in a high-pressure start-up environment.
