Introduction Waste Management Program in GreenHub: In Viet Nam, there are over 30 million tons of waste generated annually, including paper scraps, metals, glass, rubber and other plasticizers. Among these, only 10% are collected for recycling (MONRE, 2015). The amount of waste generated in urban areas is at 1,19 kg/day/person; on average 0,814 kg/day/person. In addition, only 18,7% of the 573 available landfills in Viet Nam meet the hygiene and design requirements (Ministry of Construction 2018). The current solid waste generation and management situation in metropolitan areas continues to remain among mong the most pressing environmental issues. The majority of urban household solid waste is not sorted on sites. In some metropolitan areas, sorting is only carried out at a limited scale in some pilot districts and wards. It is estimated that the solid waste amount generated from activities in urban areas will be approximately 38,000 tons/ day with an increase rate of 12% annually. The urban solid waste comprises of approximately 54-77% organic components, recyclable waste (including plastic and metal) takes about 8-18%. Toxic waste mixed into household waste at landfills is roughly 0.02 – 0.82%. Common solid waste treatment technology includes landfill, organic composition and incineration. In urban areas, the ratio of solid waste treated with landfill is around 34%, household solid waste recycled and reduced through professional agencies is at 43% and the remaining solid waste as a result of the landfill process is at 24%. Recognizing the need for partnership-based solutions, GreenHub is a core member in the development of the Association of Zero Waste in Vietnam, a member of Our Sea of Asia Network (OSEAN), and a member of the Civil Forum on Marine Waste in the Asia-Pacific. GreenHub is focused on results in the following practices: • Utilize mass media campaigns to promote initiatives in monitoring, reusing, recycling, reducing and redirecting the purpose of using plastic products. • Construct and implement programs monitoring marine plastic waste in Vietnam • Advocate and promote activities of the Network of Youth Protecting the Ocean in order to mobilize the active involvement of youth in plastic pollution reduction initiatives. • Publish at least two related publications annually. • Participate and contribute to the construction of the National Plan on Marine Waste.
