R&D Engineer

Job context:

Damen Song Cam Shipyard Co., Ltd is a joint venture between Damen Shipyards Group in the Netherlands (70%) and Song Cam Shipyard (30%), member of SBIC and based in Haiphong, Vietnam. At a 42 hectares site just outside Haiphong, Damen Song Cam is a strategic and pre-ferred production location within the Damen Shipyards Group to produce tugboats and work-boats. At the moment, the shipyard is a dedicated outfitting shipyard, outfitting, commissioning and delivering approx. 40 vessels per year to clients worldwide. At a later stage Damen Song Cam will further increase its production facilities to deliver approx. 80 vessels a year and will start to produce some of the hulls which are currently sub-contracted to other yards.

Damen Song Cam Engineering (DSCS-E) Department is responsible for providing detailed engi-neering and standards services for all Damen projects and delivering high quality production in-formation and support to shipyards worldwide, in time and within budget.

The Engineering Departments consists of two main Groups: DSCS Team and Team Specials.

The DSCS Team is responsible to engineer and assist the Damen Song Cam Shipyard in building efficiently Damen’s Standard products, while the Team Specials is assigned to execute One-Off, First of Series and Special projects.

Over the last 3 years an R&D department is growing to a more dedicated and independent role.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

DSCS R&D carries out the tasks of sea trial, measurement and evaluation for research/product development, perform inclining tests and make the stability booklets for the ship. Furthermore we carry out analysis of the structures of the ship (FEA and hand calculations), make proposal and suggestion for the best structure solution for engineering and support the production of the ship-yard in the docking, launching of vessels and other tasks as requested.

The sea trial requirement for an R&D engineer is the participation in measurements during the vessel trial at the sea and relevant preparation at the shipyard's quay. Cooperation with the pro-ject manager to investigate and find out solutions to solve issues (when occur). The R&D Engi-neer will be responsible for the results measured, make sure that the results are accurate and relia-ble and discuss with DSGo Research the outcome. The main tasks of these measurements are common trials (Bollard pull measurement, Speed measurement, maneuvering trial, Sound and Vi-bration measurement etc.). The trial engineer is also responsible the make the procedure, measure and submit the registration organization for approval and issue the certificate for the Comfort Noise and Vibration of the ship.

EXPECTED RESULTS / FUNCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

Performance

- FEM and strength calculation.

- Docking and launching calculation.

- Given and check the loading condition of the vessel prepared for the sea trial.

- Performance the trial on Tug board and HSC.

- Measure and evaluation the engine shaft power.

- Measure and analysis the heat transfer of the cooling system.

- Carry out the measurement at correct the operation of the vessel and the sea condition at the same time of measurement.

- Store carefully the log file and write down enough information during testing and measurement.

- Contact with supervisor and team members to get support to solve the trouble that happened during the measurement.

- Make the report and send it to DSGo Research and Project manager.

Use of the measuring equipment.

- Read carefully the user guide to use the device.

- Check equipment before go to sea trial.

- Make sure the measurement is safe for yourself and equipment.

- Use equipment correct function of it.

- Keep it clean

- Packing and store equipment at correct place.

Other activities

- Constantly perfects knowledge and skills on specialty.

- Participates actively in trainings of newcomers.

- Performs planned tasks strictly within the budget and in specified terms.

- Provides report on performed tasks according to applicable instructions.

- Carries out designer supervision and, if necessary, technical support on a shipyard, works in the office of the Client.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Qualification and skill level:

- Higher education technical

- Familiar with calculation, analysis and performance of work on board.

- Qualification in Shipbuilding and Electrical/Mechanical/Marine Engineering

- Good Written and Verbal English

Training/experience:

- Good knowledge of theory of the ship and relevant calculation.
