BIS Hanoi is looking for a potential candidate to join our team as Secondary Teaching Assistant (1:1 Support). You will work in partnership with the class teacher to support the delivery of high-quality education and care to children aged 11-18 years old. The role will involve providing individual support to a student with special/additional learning/developmental needs.
KEY RESULTS AREA:
Teaching & Learning
• Establish a constructive relationship with students and interact with them according to individual needs, acting as a role model and setting high expectations.
• Communication must be conducted in English
• Challenge students’ thinking while understanding their limitations.
• Use strategies from the students' IEPs and work on targets.
• Give feedback to teachers on pupil achievement, progress, and problems.
• Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflicts and incidents and reporting in line with school policy
• Encourage students to self-scaffold first, then provide a prompt, then provide a clue, then model what is expected, and lastly correct them if they still haven’t understood.
• Do not accept "I don’t know"—use the "I don’t know" framework to help you.
The Environment
• Create classroom environments that are safe and conducive to learning for students.
• Help facilitate students in collecting all their materials after a lesson has ended.
• Encourage a “plan for two.”
Pastoral Care
• Positively manage students’ behaviour within the classroom and address behavioural issues appropriately, ensuring that all students are kept safe and that accidents are minimised.
• Establish positive, productive working relationships with students: be consistent and fair; do not make negative comments to the students.
• Support students when they are emotional or upset in an appropriate way.
• Raise the self-esteem of students: address students in the same way; use positive comments; encourage independence appropriate to age and maturity.
• If students require lunchtime support, you will be expected to assist them (uncommon in secondary).
• Observe for any signs of mistreatment emotional or physical abuse or neglect from home or peers and report using the school safeguarding systems.
Support for the Teacher
• Familiarise yourself with each subject within the curriculum. Read the teacher’s lesson plans, curriculum books, syllabus, etc. Your responsibility is to help the student, not do the work for them.
• Provide regular feedback to teachers on pupil achievement, progress, and problems.
• Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflicts and incidents and reporting in line with school policy.
• Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, equal opportunities, health and safety, security, confidentiality, data protection, and report all concerns to the appropriate person.
Support for Parents
• Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers.
• Provide updates for families on their child’s progress.
• Provide updates to the Learning Support Coordinator on the student’s progress.
• Listen for any negative or inappropriate comments in Vietnamese and report these to the teacher.
Support for the school
• Attend staff meetings and other school events as deemed appropriate by the Head Teacher. Participate in training, other learning activities, and performance development as required.
• Share and contribute ideas within the school.
• Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the team and school.
Support for the cirriculumn
• Be involved in an evaluation process and professional development training aimed at improving your performance in your role.
• Deliver learning activities to students within an agreed system of supervision, adjusting activities according to students' responses/needs.
• Use the students' IEPs effectively to support learning activities and develop students’ competence and independence in its use.

Qualification/ Training:
• University graduate – Essential
• Familiarity with the International Curriculum (IB and/or IGCSE) – Desirable
Experience and Skills
• Competent English speaker– Essential
• Experience of working with secondary Students – Essential
• Experience of working with students with additional needs – Desirable
• Work constructively as part of a team – Essential
• Experience of being part of a highly successful department and school – Essential
• Good classroom practice and interpersonal skills – Essential
• Working in partnership with parents – Essential
• Be able to engage and inspire new learners of English – Desirable
• Be open to ideas, to continued professional development – Desirable
• Excellent oral and written communication skills – Essential
• Excellent time management skills and flexibility in dealing with multi-functional tasks - Essential
